No, they’re not closing the legendary Land Rover manufacturing plant in Solihull, West Midlands. They’re adding 275 new jobs.
They have to. It seems that, following the seventh consecutive month of improved sales - with March sales in the UK recording the highest figures for any month in the company's 62 year history – they’re going to have to start keeping up with demand a bit better.
Phil Popham, Land Rover managing director said: "These additional positions are excellent news for the manufacturing industry in the Midlands. It comes as a result of a phenomenal response received from customers and the media to the award winning 2010 model year range, giving Land Rover an incredible start to the year."
More than 5,000 people work at the Solihull plant. The plant builds the iconic Defender model, the widely acclaimed LR4 (which saw sales increase by 58% over last year) and both the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover models (up by 70% and 36% respectively).
Many feared the plant would close when Tata Motors of India bought the place, a worry compounded by failing sales for virtually all manufacturers worldwide.
What a difference a year makes, eh?
