A new initiative at JLR will bring comfort to the factory floor, with a new line of workwear focused on comfort, and new radios on the factory floor so employees can jam to their favorite tunes while they build Land Rovers.
The decision to add radios was based on a century of research into the topic. As far back as the 1930s, it's been shown that music improves worker morale, mental health, and efficiency. A test program began two years ago, and 90% of the employees who could hear the music in the factory said it made their day better.
The program has already been successful, with some improvements in productivity and morale mentioned in the trial report. The Solihull factory is already jamming out, and it's going so well that the program will soon roll out to the Halewood factory near Liverpool. (All the more appropriate since Liverpool is the home of the Beatles and many of Britain's other great musicians!) Soon, 10,000 employees will enjoy listening to music while they build Land Rovers.
New work wear for workers in various factory roles is also available, the end result of a long project done in collaboration with workers. The workwear is designed as "luxury," and the development program focused on creating a premium handfeel when fabrics were chosen. There is also a focus on sustainability. The garments all contain 40%- 96% recycled polyester alongside cotton. All softshell padding is made from recycled material. New uniforms will not have employee names embroidered, making the garments reusable. All outgoing uniforms will be repurposed via the Salvation Army.
There will be options for employees with personal requirements. There's maternity workwear for expecting mothers, a matching hijab for women who wish to embrace their faith at work, and temperature-regulating gear for employees in certain parts of the factory. Over 300 variants and sizes of clothing are available, so there's something for every employee.
The basic idea? Happy, comfortable workers will imbue the vehicles they build with the same "modern luxury" that their work environment creates.
