The new Indian-built Range Rovers, announced a few weeks ago for local market production, debuted at a Range Rover House event in the chic coastal town of Alibaug, near Mumbai.
Range Rover House is the brand's travelling showcase, which pops up in the finest places at just the right times on the social calendar. It started at the 2022 Monterey Car Week, with Range Rover House Carmel, and has since moved through the great ski towns and summer retreats of the world. The first Indian event took place in Alibaug, 140 kilometers from Mumbai. Here, the Range Rover House was a remote and lush jungle retreat.
Outside, three models were on display. Two of them were the new locally-produced Range Rover models: the full-size Range Rover, and the Range Rover Sport. Also on display, and flown in from England, was the first Range Rover chassis number from 1969, YVB 151H. This vehicle, painted in the pre-production-only color Deep Olive Green, has the first serial number possible on its chassis, engine, gearbox and front and rear axles. The vehicle spent many years bouncing around private ownership before being purchased by the Land Rover Centre in Huddersfield, England, who owned it until 2014. That year, it was auctioned off for £132,250, and has remained in the UK with frequent appearances for marketing purposes. As India builds its first Range Rover, it was appropriate to have the first-built British Range Rover on-site.
Access to the venue was provided by a luxurious yacht ride, adding another level of isolation and exclusivity. The House also featured a Fragrance Lab to mix your own perfumes, with Indian-derived ingredients. vetiver from Assam, saffron from Kashmir, and tea from Darjeeling. There were also sound and crystal healing sessions, clothing selections from SS Homme, and food from acclaimed Mumbai restaurant Masque.
Alongside all of those experiences were areas to customize and order an Indian-built Range Rover. Standard models are produced in India, while the Special Vehicles editions continue to be imported from England, with all associated import taxes.
