Land Rover will be presenting a prototype of its first diesel-electric hybrid vehicle at the 2011 Geneva Autoshow, the Range Rover Range-e.
The Range Rover Range-e draws its power from a 67kw electric motor and a 3-liter V6 turbo engine, which together generate impressive fuel efficiency at 85mpg. The Range-e can travel at speeds of up to 50mph and distance of 20 miles on pure electric power. Combine diesel and electric power sources and the Range-e is able to travel around 700 miles. What’s more, the Range-e produces CO2 emissions comparable to a vehicle half its size at 89g/km.
So with all of these advancements in fuel efficiency, has the Range-e compromised power and off-road prowess? The answer- so far- is not at all. In fact, the Range-e’s electric-diesel combination is quicker than the regular Range Rover Sport Diesel. Land Rover is also pledging to make the Range-e as capable off-road as the rest of its Rover counterparts.
