Sometimes there are treasures lying right under your nose, you just need to have the proper vision to recognize it. Such was the case for Range Rover owner Scott Janovich who spied an old, dilapidated Callaway P38 Range Rover sitting in his friends field one day.

“The Rover was in pretty rough shape, it had been sitting for 16 months and animals had started to make a home of the interior - the car looked and smelled like it had several cats living in it for some time.” Despite its unsightly appearance, Scott knew the old Rover was a diamond in the rough. You see, a C11 Callaway Range Rover 4.6 is an incredibly rare find.

In the late 90s, Callaway was commissioned by Land Rover North America to put its engineering expertise to work on the P38 Range Rover. To that point, Callaway was best known for the impressive aftermarket work they had done with American muscle cars, primarily Corvettes. Callaway’s goal was to develop limited-edition, ultra-high-performance vehicles, and it remains that way to this day. The C11 Callaway Range Rover 4.6 featured internal engine modifications, a dual outlet exhaust system and a specially designed intake system, good for 240 hp and 285 lb-ft of torque (10% increase over stock). There were only 220 C11 Callaway Range Rover’s every made, so you could understand Scott’s immediate interest in the old Rover that sat in the field. “Mine is #216,” notes Scott, evidence that his Callaway was one of the last to leave the production line.

To fully appreciate Scott’s Range Rover, its crucial that readers understand just how much time and effort went into its rehabilitation, work that was required considering the vehicle’s abysmal condition. “The motor was melted at one of the water jackets...the car had been converted to coil springs, and the drive train was in real bad shape. I went through every inch of this car, axles, hubs, breaks, transmission, transfer case, motor, and of course, I replaced the EAS system in its entirety.” Atlantic British is proud to have played at least a small role in the rebuild, supplying a premium Ferodo brake kit to ensure Scott’s Callaway Range had plenty of stopping power paired with its impressive engine output.

All of that work, and we haven’t mentioned Scott’s efforts on the interior. The inside of the Rover was in such disarray that it required a complete overhaul; everything was removed and started from scratch. To accomplish this, Scott purchased a 2002 P38 with a beautiful interior, gave it a thorough cleaning and swapped out the parts. Scott describes the process: “I wiped down every wire and connector in the car, I cleaned the inside of the doors while the panels were off and I check EVERYTHING! I removed the dash and replaced the blen motors and installed an Audi heater core to eliminate the need for o-rings at the Land Rover heater core, which is a point of failure for the Range Rover.”

These day Scott uses his Callaway as his road driver, taking full advantage of the vehicle’s performance and distinctive styling. Scott did his rebuild the right way, sparing no effort to ensure his vehicle was literally, as good as new. Recently, Scott received perhaps the greatest compliment that could be bestowed on a vehicle enthusiast. Reeves Callaway of Callaway cars has taken notice of the vehicle, and has asked Scott to bring the C11 Callaway Range Rover to Callaway headquarters in California! Given the hard work and craftsmanship in his rebuild, we can certainly understand why.

Like so many Rover enthusiasts, Scott’s Callaway is not his only project. He uses a 1996 Range Rover for his trail needs which he has been working on for five years. The odometer on that P38 (Scott’s favorite Rover model) reads 313,740.8 (!), further testament to Scott’s impressive abilities in the workshop.

Scott fills with pride when talking about his Callaway; he saw a diamond in the rough and turned his vision for an old beat up Range Rover into a reality There is something to be said about seeing (and enjoying) the fruits of your labor. If you’re in California, keep an eye out for Scott’s Callaway - you can recognize it by his “C11AWY” vanity plate, a clever hat tip to the model that he loves so dearly.

Scott would like to thank his wife for her patience and sacrifice during the long hours of the rebuild process. He would also like to personally thank Martin for being a friend and mentor through all of his Range Rover projects. Atlantic British would like to thank Scott for sharing his story.
