The event grew bigger and more intense every year, and began to experiment with more arid environments alongside the usual lush green jungle locations.

There may be no adventure associated with Land Rover that is more iconic than the Camel Trophy. For eighteen years, the ultimate test of man and machine was partnered with the Best4x4xFar. It was an adventure that touched every part of the globe, and took Land Rovers through the harshest conditions. As Camel Trophy turns 40 in 2020, we're going to look back throughout the year at the history of The Great Adventure.

In 1998, Land Rover celebrated its fiftieth anniversary, a major milestone for any company. It was celebrated in due style, particularly in America, where Land Rover was enjoying success with Range Rover and Discovery sales. Many enthusiasts consider the 1990s one of Land Rover's greatest periods, and the 50th Anniversary was certainly part of that. It also created a significant cache of memorabilia that still circulates. As we celebrate Land Rover's 72nd anniversary, let's take a look back almost a quarter-century to how we celebrated in North America.

Seventy years ago, in April 1950, the British Automobile & Motor Cycle Show was held at the Grand Central Palace in New York City. Among the models exhibited was the Land Rover, which had not been formally imported to the United States at this point, though some had been sold in Canada. This marked the beginning of high-volume Land Rover sales in the United States.

The 2020 Dakar Rally is going on now, with a convoy of race vehicles that bear as much resemblance to a factory vehicle as a NASCAR Toyota Camry does to one in a rental car lot. It's the first rally to be held in Saudi Arabia, the third region to host the rally. Many of the colors in their palate over the years have been derived from the names of places, both in Britain and abroad. The origin of some of these names is obvious, but a few have some obscure tie to the place they’re named after.

Fifty-one years ago, one of the most famous and stealthy military Land Rovers came into existence – the Pink Panther. Thirty-five years after its retirement, it’s still an icon and one of the most collectible military Land Rovers.

Just like the Land Rover broke down barriers, Barbara Toy did too, taking some of the first extremely long-range expeditions with the new Series I Land Rover in the early 1950s. A woman traveling solo, she took her truck, Pollyanna, around the world, focusing often on the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East. Not only was she one of the first women to travel long-distance overland solo; she was one of the first people to do it at all.

2019 marks two significant anniversaries for the Land Rover Discovery, the do-it-all hero of the Land Rover lineup. It's 30 years since its launch in 1989 in most global markets, and 25 years since it entered the North American marketplace in 1994. To celebrate, we're going to take a two-part look back at the history of this significant Land Rover model this month.
