Ground clearance is an important factor for successful off-road driving in your Discovery Series 2. The lowest points of the vehicle will inevitably make contact with the ground at some stage while driving in ruts or negotiating rocks and tree stumps. The steering rods on live axle Land Rover Discovery 2's are particularly vulnerable and can easily get bent seriously affecting front wheel alignment and steering ability. Even slightly bent steering rods can cause excessive tire wear and poor handling. For Discovery 2 vehicles that are fitted with very large tires, the forces acting on the steering gear are far greater, especially when off-road. Hard impacts on the wheels can also bend or kink the steering rods causing serious steering problems.
Terrafirma steering rods are made from solid 30mm diameter steel and are supplied with precisely machined left and right hand threads, locking nuts, quality greaseable track rod ends, and a steering damper bracket.
If you're thinking of offroading, you'll need to reinforce your steering components to take it to the trail.
Watch Doug, our Land Rover Master Technician, in Part Five (Extra) of our video how-to series, as he removes and replaces the standard panhard rod and steering rod assemblies on our project D2.
Doug then upgrades with and installs Terrafirma all-steel, heavy-duty models, designed to withstand the stresses of off-roading.

Upgrading Steering?? I highly recommend this kit from Terrafirma. Immediately, one can tell how heavy duty these rods are made. The video instruction for installing them was superb. The install went as exactly as the video indicates to include how to get the old ones unstuck. They look good with their brass color as well. I can't wait until the panhard rod comes in to complete the project.

Nice piece of kit, the tie rod ends are good quality, beefy, and have grease fittings. The rod end seals look like they have good initial quality. One gripe- the set came with castle nuts and cotter pins, which is fine- but the castle nuts were too short for the drilled hole and the cotter pin did not engage thru the castle nut. Would still keep it from falling off completely but seems like an oversight. I swapped them for some new M12-1.75 Nylocks.

I felt that these were a bargain. Heavy duty parts that were easily installed. Easy to adjust alignment.
