Just like any petroleum-based fluid in your Discovery 1 they do break down over a period of time.
You will get condensation buildup in the differentials in a transfer case and you definitely don't want water and either one of those.

In this video, Doug will show you the drain and fill points of the front and rear differentials and transfer case.
