EAS ECU "In-Line Filter Module" Model

Applies To:

Item: 7980 version 2.0
For Range Rover HSE (L322) | '06 - '09

EAS (Electronic Air Suspension) ECU (Electronic Control Unit)

PLEASE NOTE: For model year 2006 owners ONLY, disregard these instructions and simply remove fuse #57 and #7 to eliminate error messaging.

Caution: To understand the operation and to become familiar with the signals that the module will provide, it is important that you read through these instructions before beginning the suspension configuration.

Function and Installation:

Requirement: When replacing a dynamic air spring suspension with a coil spring suspension, the EAS (Electronic Air Suspension) ECU (Electronic Control Unit) will generate error messages due to the lack of control of the coil spring suspension.

Operational Overview

In-Line Filter Mode: The Model 7980-V2.0 is permanently wired into the vehicles wiring harness, near the EAS ECU on the right side (passenger) of the vehicle. In this mode the module monitors all of the messages to and from the ECU and dynamically filters out all error messages.

Installation

Tools Needed:

  • Flat Blade Screwdriver
  • #20 Torx Driver
  • Wire Cutters
  • Wire Strippers

Procedure

1. Remove the "Sill Plate" on the right side of the vehicle. (See figure #1)

Remove the Sill Plate
Figure #1.

2. Remove the Console Panel on the left side of the passenger footwell by removing the screw toward the rear of the panel and then snapping it out of position. (See figure #2 and #3)

3. Remove the Upper Panel by removing the 2 screws. (See figure #4)

4. Disconnect the connector of the footwell lamp on the back of the panel so you can move it out of your way. (See figure #5)

5. Disconnect the connector of the footwell lamp on the back of the panel so you can move it out of your way. (See figure #6)

6. With this panel removed, you will see a mass of wires. You will need to locate the EAS ECU that is mounted to the right and up out of view. (See figure #7)

locate the EAS ECU
Figure #7.

7. Looking up you will see these 4 connectors. You will want to unplug the 2 connectors indicated with the arrows. (See figure #8)

unplug the 2 connectors
Figure #8.

8. Looking at the Black connector, cut / remove a section of the black harness wrap so that you have room to work on the wires. (See figure #9)

9. Identify the 2 data wires that you will be cutting in the following steps. It is VERY important that you cut the correct wires, so double (and triple) check before cutting. The wire colors are Yellow with a Brown stripe (Pin # 16) and Yellow with a Black stripe (Pin # 19). (See figure #10)

10. Cut the 2 data wires. (See figure #11) NOTE: This picture is for reference to the cut wires and which side is the Vehicle Side and which side is the ECU Side. The connector body is White where your connector will be Black.)

11. Strip the insulation from each end of the 2 Data wires you just cut (4 strips total) and strip all 6 wires on the Filter Module Wiring Harness (supplied with the 7980 module) by 5/16 inch. (See figure #12)

Strip the insulation from each end of the 2 Data wires

12. Using the Posi-Lock wire splices connect the Data Wires to the Filter Module Wiring Harness as follows: Note: it is VERY important that you take care to get the proper wires spliced together.

13. After the Data Wires are spliced, your harness should look like this. (See figure #13) White connector shown, your connector will be Black.

14. Now that the data wires are connected, you will need to connect power and ground to the filter module. Identify the Brown & Red wire in the Black connector at pin # 20. (See figure #14)

15. Using the smaller Posi-Tap (Black & Red), connect the Red wire from the Filter wiring harness to the Brown / Red wire at Pin # 20. (See figures #15 & #16)

16. To connect the ground wire, find the Brown wire in pin # 24 on the White connector. (See figure #17)

17. Using the larger Gray & Black Posi-Tap, connect the Black wire from the Filter Wiring Harness to the Brown wire in pin # 24. (See figures #18 & #19)

18. With all 6 wires securely connected, plug the 2 connectors back into the EAS ECU and plug the model 7980-V2.0 Filter Module in place.

19. The In-Line Filter Module is now part of the vehicles control system. To verify proper operation and to configure the module do the following:

A. Turn the ignition on and wait a few seconds while the module determines that it is wired as an In-Line Filter and then observe the 2 LEDs on the end of the module.

B. You should see the Orange LED flashing once a second ("ON" for 1 second and then "OFF" for one second), and the Green LED will be flashing rapidly. If you do not see the LEDs operating in this manner, then you should turn the ignition off and recheck all of your connections.

C. To configure for Coil Spring Suspension hold the button on the end of the In-Line Filter in for between 5 and 10 seconds. As soon as you see the Orange LED light, release the button. The Filter is now configured for Coil Spring Suspension.

D. If you ever would like to revert back to an Air Spring Suspension, you can configure the Filter by holding the button in for between 10 and 15 seconds. As soon as you see the Green LED light, release the button.

E. Once the module is configured, the Green LED will flash rapidly indicating normal operation.

20. At this point you might want to take the vehicle out for a test drive to verify that the error messages have been suppressed. Be sure to secure the wiring harness and any panels that may be in the way of safe driving.

21. You do not want to leave the In-Line Filter module dangling from the harness. Not only will this put unnecessary strain on the splices, but you risk having the button inadvertently pressed and it might change the configuration. It is a good idea to secure the module by cable tying it to the wiring harness as seen in the following picture. (See figure 20)

22. Reinstall all of the panels.
