Air Suspension Configuration Device

Caution! To understand the different modes of operation and to become familiar with the signals that the module will provide, it is important that you read through these instructions before beginning the suspension configuration.

Function and Installation:

Requirement: When replacing a dynamic air spring suspension with a coil spring suspension, the EAS (Electronic Air Suspension) ECU (Electronic Control Unit) will generate error messages due to the lack of control of the coil spring suspension.

IMPORTANT! The device will automatically store the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the first vehicle that it is connected to. It will then be permanently locked to that vehicle.

Operational Overview:

The Model 7980-V2.0 can operate in two distinct modes, described as follows:

A. ReFlash Mode: In Reflash mode, the Model 7980-V2.0 is used to reprogram a few data bytes stored in a handful of the vehicles subsystem control modules.

Advantages of ReFlash Mode:

1. The reflashing of the data bytes is relatively quick and easy, and is entirely achieved through the OBD2--Diagnostic connector.

2. No changes to the vehicle wiring or permanent installation of hardware is required.

3. The vehicle can easily be reverted to Air Spring Suspension, if you ever need to do so.

4. Eliminates the "scrolling" error messages seen on the Instrument Pack.

5. Retains Terrain Response Controls

Disadvantages of ReFlash Mode:

1. The RED "Suspension Error" icon on the Instrument Pack will remain illuminated.

B. In-Line Filter Mode: In In-Line Filter mode, the Model 7980-V2.0 is permanently wired into the vehicles wiring harness, near the EAS ECU. In this mode the module monitors all of the messages to and from the ECU and dynamically filters out all error messages.

Advantages of In-Line Filter Mode:

1. All of the advantages of ReFlash Mode plus the RED "Suspension Error" icon on the Instrument Pack is disabled.

Disadvantages of In-Line Filter Mode:

1. The installation process requires the disassembly of the panels in the drivers side foot well to gain access to the wiring harness near the EAS ECU. The module is then installed by cutting 2 wires in the vehicles wiring harness and splicing the module in place.

NOTE: The EAS ECU is located on the left side (driver) of the vehicle for the LR3 (L319) and Range Rover Sport (L320). It is located on the right side (passenger) on the Range Rover HSE (L322).

Installation Overview:

To use the Model 7980-V2.0 in ReFlash mode refer to section "A1" below.

To install the Model 7980-V2.0 as an In-Line Filter, skip to section "B1".

Before You Start:

  • Ensure that the battery is fully charged.
  • Ensure the vehicle is in Park / Neutral with the Parking Brake applied.
  • It is recommended that the headlights are turned off throughout the configuration process.
  • Do not start the engine at any point during the configuration process.

Installation Procedures:

A1 - ReFlash Mode:

Locate the Diagnostic Connector (ODBII). (See Figures 1 & 2).

Plug the #7980 device into the Diagnostic socket. (See Figure 3).

General Operation

Power Up - Turn Ignition On

The device powers up automatically when it is inserted into the vehicles diagnostic socket.

When the device powers up it will flash the orange LED rapidly. A series of checks will then be performed to ensure that the configuration process can commence.

If these checks pass the device will flash the orange and green LEDs alternately twice a second. The device is now ready to configure the vehicle.

If the checks do not pass the LEDs will flash alternately.

Selecting a Mode of Operation

Both modes of operation are accessed using the 'mode selection button' located at the rear of the device.

In order to select the mode of operation you must hold this button down for a set period of time until the sounder emits a tone indicating that the required mode has been activated. The mode button can then be released to commence the configuration process.

Table #1 below describes how to select the operating modes using this button.

Coil Spring Configuration

Press and hold the mode selection button for 3 seconds.


Air Suspension Configuration
Continue to hold the mode selection button down for a further 3 seconds.
Continue to hold the mode selection button down for a further 3 seconds.

If the button is held down continuously the device will cycle through the modes until it is released.

During Operation

Once a mode of operation has been selected the configuration process will commence automatically.

In order to configure the vehicle the device must reprogram a number of ECUs, perform a complete vehicle reset and clear all fault codes.

During this process a number of interior / warning lights may flash and faults may be logged. This is normal and can usually be ignored.

Throughout configuration the device will flash one of the LEDs once per second (green for coil spring mode, orange for air suspension mode). The entire process should last approximately 1 minute.

If configuration is successful, the device will flash the orange and green LEDs alternately.

If configuration fails the device will flash the orange and green LEDs alternately, twice per second.

Once the reconfiguration operation has completed the ignition must be cycled twice to clear any error messages logged during the process.

Identifying Configured Mode

It is possible to identify the mode the vehicle is currently configured to by observing the height adjustment indicator light located next to the height adjustment button.

  • 1. Insert the ignition key and turn the ignition on (position II).
  • 2. Wait for the vehicle self checks to complete (approx. 30 seconds).

If the vehicle is configured for 4 Corner Air Suspension the height adjustment indicator light will be illuminated.

If the vehicle is configures for 4 Corner Coil Springs the height adjustment indicator light will not be illuminated.

Configuration Procedure

1. Double check that the parking brake is applied, then insert the ignition key and turn the ignition on (position II).

2. Wait for the vehicle self checks to complete (approx. 30 seconds).

3. Plug the configuration device into the diagnostic socket, ensuring that you are not holding down the mode selection button.

4. Wait for the device to power up and indicate that it is ready to configure the vehicle. (See "Power Up" Section).

5. Select the required mode of operation. (See Table #1).

6. Wait for the device to complete the configuration process and indicate that it was successful.

7. Remove the configuration device from the diagnostic socket.

8. Turn the ignition off and remove the ignition key.

9. Wait for 30 seconds.

10. Insert the ignition key and turn the ignition on (position II).

11. Wait for the vehicle self checks to complete (approx. 30 seconds).

12. Repeat steps 8, 9, 10 and 11.

13. The configuration process is now complete and all faults should have been cleared.

PLEASE NOTE: While the successful completion of the Re-Flash will eliminate any and all error messages from the Instrument Pack display, the "Air Suspension Warning Indicator" will be illuminated as seen in Figure #4.

B1 - In-Line Filter Mode:

Tools Needed:

  • Flat Blade Screwdriver (or Panel Popper to remove Foot Rest Top)
  • 10mm Socket with extension
  • #15 Torx Driver
  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • Wire Citters
  • Wire Strippers


Access to EAS ECU:

1. Remove the Foot Rest by first popping the cover off, then remove 2 ea. nuts. (See figure 1 & 2)

2. With the Foot Rest out, you can remove the Left Side Panel by taking out the hood release lever (Torx Screw) and pulling the panel toward you. (See figure 3 & 4)

3. Loosen the 2 screws securing the upper panel and drop it down. You don't need to remove it as long as you can secure it so that it is out of the way as you work on the EAS ECU wiring harness. (See figure 5)

4. Remove the panel just below the steering wheel by pulling it toward you. It will come right out as seen in this picture. (See figure 6)

5. Locate the EAS ECU. It will be mounted fairly high up on the left wall in the cavity that you have just exposed with the removal of the panels. (See figure 7)

6. Locate the mounting bolt at the top of the EAS ECU. It will be difficult to see, but you can feel it at the top of the ECU. Use the 10mm socket to remove the bolt. The ECU can then be pulled down by first pushing it up a bit to free it from the mounting "pegs" along the bottom of the unit. With the unit free of its mounting you can maneuver it down allowing access to the connectors and wiring harness. (See figure 8)

7. Locate connector C0867 and unplug it from the ECU. (See figure 9)

8. Examine the backside of the connector and identify the 2 Data wires. The wires are in position 16 and 19 of the connector. They will be twisted together. (See figure 10, 11, 12)

9. Cut the 2 data wires. Be sure to double (and triple) check the wires before cutting. As you might imagine, cutting the wrong wires will cause you much difficulty as you proceed with this installation. (See figure 13)

10. Strip the insulation from each end of the 2 Data wires you just cut (4 strips total) and strip all 6 wires on the Filter Module Wiring Harness (supplied with the 7980 module) by 5/16 inch. (See figure 14)

11. Using the Posi-Lock wire splices connect the Data Wires to the Filter Module Wiring Harness as follows:

NOTE: It is VERY important that you take care to get the proper wires spliced together.

12. After the Data Wires are spliced, your harness should look like this. (See figure 15)

13. Locate the positive power wire on C0867. It will be in position 20 (next to the Yellow/Black wire you just spliced) (See figure 16)

14. Using the smaller (Red / Brown) Posi-Tap connect the Red wire from the Filter Wiring Harness to the Green/White wire. You do NOT need to cut the wire, we are just tapping into the power on this wire. (See figures 17, 18)

15. Locate connector C2321, and unplug it from the ECU. (See figure 19)

16. Locate the Black wire in position 24 of C2321 and using the larger Black Posi-Tap connect the Black wire from the Filter Wiring Harness to this wire. Just like with the power wire in step # 14, we are NOT cutting this wire, just splicing. (See figures 20, 21, 22)

17. You can now plug both connectors (C0867 and C2321 back into the EAS ECU.

18. The In-Line Filter Module is now part of the vehicles control system. To verify proper operation and to configure the module follow the following:

A. Turn the ignition on and wait a few seconds while the module determines that it is wired as an In-Line Filter and then observe the 2 LEDs on the end of the module.

B. You should see the Orange LED flashing once a second ("ON" for 1 second and then "OFF" for one second), and the Green LED will be flashing rapidly. If you do not see the LEDs operating in this manner, then you should turn the ignition off and recheck all of your connections.

C. To configure for Coil Spring Suspension hold the button on the end of the In-Line Filter in for between 5 and 10 seconds. As soon as you see the Orange LED light, release the button. The Filter is now configured for Coil Spring Suspension.

D. If you ever would like to revert back to an Air Spring Suspension, you can configure the Filter by holding the button in for between 10 and 15 seconds. As soon as you see the Green LED light, release the button.

E. Once the module is configured, the Green LED will flash rapidly indicating normal operation.

19. At this point you might want to take the vehicle out for a test drive to verify that the error messages have been suppressed. Be sure to secure the wiring harness and any panels that may be in the way of safe driving.

20. Once you are happy with the operation of the Filter, you can reassemble all of the parts you had to remove. Start with mounting the EAS ECU back into its location and secure with the mounting bolt.

21. You do not want to leave the In-Line Filter module dangling from the harness. Not only will this put unnecessary strain on the splices, but you risk having the button inadvertently pressed and it might change the configuration. It is a good idea to secure the module by cable tying it to the wiring harness as seen in the following picture. (See figure 23)

22. Reinstall all of the panels, and the Foot Rest.
