Rubber Valve Cover Gasket LVC100260, New Style, For Land Rover Discovery I, Discovery Series II, Defender 90 And 110, Range Rover P38, And Range Rover Classic (See Fitment Years)

What's happened is the gasket has become heated and compressed.

Basically taking the sealing properties away from the valve cover and the bolts, on your GEMS engine Discovery 1, Defender 90, Classic, and '96 to early '99 P38 Range Rover.

This is why they leak.

And over a period of time you will do these on a regular basis on these just by design every 3 or 4 years.
