Those lamenting the discontinuation of the iconic Defender have a chance to enjoy the vehicle for a little longer, thanks to the new Defender Challenge by Bowler, a one-vehicle race series styled after similar competitions like the Ferrari Challenge and the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo.
The series aims to be a prep-competition of sorts for drivers with intentions of competing in larger-scale events like the Dakar Rally. Seven races are scheduled for the 2014 Defender Challenge, all of which will take place in the UK. Participants in the series will drive a Defender Challenge, a modified Defender 90 Hard Top with a factory 2.2 liter diesel engine which Bowler has upgraded to produce 170 hp. Each SUV will also come equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, Kuhmo tires, roll cage and fire extinguisher setup.
Each Defender will run $80,125, with entry fees for the series ranging between $16,000 and $22,000.
