Amsterdam, 14th April 2016: Today, Jaguar Land Rover showed its support for the EU's plan for the standardization and harmonization of autonomous vehicle technology. With EU Transport Ministers looking on, company officials demonstrated the capabilities of some of JLR's experimental, highly-autonomous vehicles. The demos included 'hands free' driving on the busy, crowded, and narrow streets of Amsterdam.
The Transport Ministers were attending the EU Council of Ministers meeting discussing the importance of legal and technical standardization and harmonization applicable to the testing, selling and liability associated with autonomous vehicles.
JLR’s Director of Research and Technology, Dr Wolfgang Epple, said: "We are all working on exciting autonomous driving technologies. To successfully deliver these technologies industry needs a common approach between carmakers, mobile telecom providers and providers of roadside infrastructure systems."
"This will allow standardization and harmonization, enabling cars to communicate with each other and the roadside infrastructure around them efficiently and effectively. It allows Jaguar Land Rover to deliver technologies that are relevant, accessible and affordable to customers."
According to JLR, their vision is to offer a choice of an engaged, or autonomous drive. The car could drive itself if the driver chooses, and offer intelligent systems that can be adjusted for a more engaging and involved drive.
The sensors and systems that will make autonomous driving possible will also help make cars safer even when a human is at the controls. Jaguar Land Rover says their Intelligent vehicles will become a reality within the next 10 years, and that it will be performing real-world testing of those technologies during the coming year.
According to one study quoted by the EU, 20% of new vehicles sold will feature some level of driving automation by 2025, and fully autonomous vehicles will be available by 2030.
