As part of Land Rover’s partnership with Intel that was announced this past January, it continues to develop its Driver Monitor System. The system is designed around the concept that the vehicle can adjust speed and braking characteristics based on whether or not it thinks the driver is focused on events occurring in the field of view in front of the windscreen.
The technology relies on a variety of hardware and software to keep an eye on where the driver’s attention is focused at any given time. While the DMS was first announced in January, a new patent application has come to our attention.
Now the sensors can detect when a driver’s eye shifts toward the rear window. The movement activates the rear wiper quickly so that the screen can be cleared within fractions of a second from the moment the driver removes his or her eyes from the road in front. This helps to avert the potential for the driver’s glances in the rear view mirror to be mistimed with intermittent wipes of a standard operating wiper system.
