Land Rover has announced that they will begin taking orders in July for Discovery Sport models featuring the new Ingenium 2.0 diesel engine. Ingenium is a completely new engine platform designed and built in-house by Land Rover.
Ingenium is a four cylinder 16 valve, over head cam turbo diesel. There are two versions that make 150hp and 180hp, with 310 and 317 foot pounds of torque. The engines are "future-proofed", according to Land Rover. They have been engineered to be easily upgrade able and adaptable as new legislation comes into effect and new technology enters the automotive arena. Discovery Sport models will need to be transverse mounted; this ability was integrated during the design of the engines.
Ingenium will also be the most efficient diesels offered to date by Land Rover, with economy figures over 50mpg in some cases.Land Rover claims there will be no price penalty for the diesel models. As always we will be keeping or eyes peeled for a US release of Ingenium vehicles. So far, a North American diesel Discovery Sport is not indicated in any of the US-based publications.
