Yet more news about the future of Defender production - Land Rover will cease manufacturing of Defenders in the UK, after a nearly 70-year continuous run starting in 1948. The classic-looking Defenders, modernized as they are, simply won’t meet new EU vehicle emissions regulations.
Previously we reported that the Land Rover was considering continuing to build Defenders outside of the UK. Now, there is new information leaking out of India that the new Defender line is likely to be based out of the existing Jaguar-Land Rover Pune plant.
An unnamed JLR spokesperson says that “India is a preferred place for the production,” for a variety of reasons including low cost and lenient regulations. ;No final decision has been made yet as to whether or not this will become a reality, or as to any timeline for the switchover. Nothing has changed though, regarding the end of production in the UK. That is still scheduled for the end of 2015.
