"The fact that it scored 93 out of a possible 100 says it all."
OK…so it may not be the sexiest award in the industry, but it is arguably the most relevant: practicality. Plant 4x4 Magazine based its 4x4 Of The Year on tests that take into account practical, user-friendly things like interior space, versatility and gadgets. Ergo, vehicles with five seats were marked out of 90 points, those with seven or more out of 100.
Commenting on the results, Planet 4x4 Editor Alan Kidd said: "There are some superbly packaged 4x4s out there, and time and again we came across great examples of clever design. But nothing came close to matching the Discovery´s (aka LR3's) consistently brilliant use of space.
"Its rear seat layout allows it to be a genuine seven-seater or a very credible van - all our testers scored it first or first equal, and the fact that it scored 93 out of a possible 100 says it all."
The Mercedes GL-Class came second while the Audi Q7 was third.
