Land Rover has never been a company that shies away from obstacles, so it lit out across the pond back in March 1987 to conquer America and hasn't looked back. Americans already had their beloved Jeep, so Land Rover got off to a somewhat slow start, taking about a decade and a half to sell the first 100,000 vehicles in the United States. Word got around about it as quickly and effortlessly as it gets around tree stumps, however, and it only took another five more months to move the next 150,000. Of course, the legendary Defender was yanked from our shores when it didn't pass the air bag test (OK, it had none), but the brand grew with the Discovery/LR4, the Freelander/LR2 and the Range Rover just kept getting better and now it has reached the half-million sales mark here in the States. Of course, it was marketed well, as these clever ads testify:
Well done, Land Rover. And happy anniversary!
