Rumor has it that Land Rover execs have been shopping property in the American South. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, and his economic development commissioner, Chris Carr, have reportedly met with Jaguar Land Rover officials to discuss the possibility of JLR opening a manufacturing facility in their state.
Such a move would be a great benefit to Jaguar Land Rover as they would then be able to avoid paying costly vehicle import tariffs.
According to a series of articles published late last year, the company was considering several different Southern US states for a factory capable of producing 200,000 vehicles annually. At that time, JLR spokespeople brushed off those reports as "speculation," and declined to comment any further.
That said, the US is the second largest car market in the world, behind China, where Land Rover already has one factory. There is also one in Brazil, and Land Rover has stated that it has "ambition to expand it international manufacturing footprint."
