What's new with Land Rover's Discovery LR3 L319? First, the alpine windows had to go to make way for airbags for the third row. The engine had to go to make way for a new Jaguar 4.4 Liter V-8 with 300 bhp and 315 lb-ft of torque (an increase of nearly 100 horsepower!) The shape was reduced, the doors enlarged, the gauges, well, you get the idea. The Discovery 3 (Series III) - called the LR3 here in the States - is a new vehicle in most every aspect. The question is, does it work?
Four hours of off road driving convinced us. The LR3 is a Land Rover, moreover, it is perhaps the most capable Land Rover ever built, and yes this includes the iconic Defender. Impressive indeed, as this vehicle includes all of Land Rover's latest goodies in a mid-market tour de force that is usually reserved for the high-end flagship models.
For the engine, oil capacity was increased by nearly 2 liters to cope with the off-roading angles Land Rovers are designed for, and all engine seals were modified to guard against dust, water, and mud during water fording and mud/sand crossings. The Discovery 3 transmission is an electronically controlled 6-speed transmission with intelligent shift that alters the timing of gear shifts and throttle response in Sport Shift or may be operated in "Command Shift" which gives the driver the option of manual control over the gears. Suspension includes everything Land Rover has come up with to date, like traction control, hill descent control, dynamic stability control and adjustable air suspension.
Off-road, the LR3 introduces Terrain Response, a highly-sophisticated new system designed to maximize both on-road composure and off-road capability. The driver simply sets the system to one of six terrain settings - pavement, normal, grass/gravel/snow (for slippery conditions), sand, deep ruts and rocks. Terrain Response automatically adjusts ride height and manages all engine, driveline, suspension and braking functions appropriate for existing conditions. (The center and rear locking differentials use different locking rates depending on terrain.)
All in all, the LR3 is a Land Rover that's as comfortable on-road as it is capable off-road, with an incredible array of technical wizardry and yet still mid-market affordable. Or, as Manrico and Mary Beth conclude, "the LR3 is not only a true Land Rover but it represents the next step in the evolution of the SUV."
