It has been so long that my struts have not done their job that I don't remember how they were supposed to work. My LR3 is a 2007 and I have usually opened up the tailgate and held it up and it would stay up. Recently, I have had to lift it up and then had to prop it open with a full size umbrella that I happened to have with me. After replacing the struts with new ones, I remembered when I first purchased my car, that I could open up the tailgate and it would raise all by itself to the full open position. Thanks Atlantic British for getting them to me fast as well.
