Firstly establish whether you are mounting a Hi-lift or Jackall jack. The Hi-lift uses holes A & C and the Jackall uses holes A & B. Next check on the configuration of the mounting studs. Some are one hole up two down and some two up and one down. This will determine which end takes the handle clamp, which must be at the top.

Rover jack diagram

Take one of the long M12 bolts and assemble the handle clamp and main body as shown, using one of the holes in the handle clamp which lines up with the chosen hole in the main body. Note: the handle clamp must end up at the top, on the right, when installed. Insert the bolt into the hole and put an M12 Nyloc nut inside the tube. Hold this nut inside the body and do the bolt up tightly. Repeat this for the other chosen hole, this time without the handle clamp. Finish off this assembl by tapping in the black end bungs.

Now remove the existing nuts holding the wheelto the carrier, one at a time. Replace each with a hexagon spacer as you go. The fittings for Aluminum wheels have a special bush and washer, which take the place of the original nuts. To state the obvious, make sure the original mounting and door are capable of taking the extra weight of the jack.

Offer up the assemble JackRack to the studs and replace the original nuts. It is possible to use anti-theft secure nuts on either of the two outside positions.

Mount the jack using two holes in its rack, which bring the jack mechanism just clear of the end of the mounting bar. A good idea is to mark these on the jack, with bright paint for the future. Add the jack base as shown and clamp both jack and base with M12 washers and Nyloc or wing nuts, but remember the warning above. Wing nuts shown in the photograph are for example only and NOT for road use.

Finally secure with a suitable padlock through the jack-mounting hole you did not use for the M12 bolt, (B or C), the jack and jack base.

On soft terrain the jack base will prove invaluable in helping the jack’s stability, but should be cleaned before stowing to make sure the bolts do up tightly.

The photograph below shows an extreme test in which we jacked up our Discovery on grass but with a brick under one end. This is far beyond what we would expect in use on soft terrain but watch out for rocks and obstacles, which will magnify the forces on the base.
