Red Cross Defender 130 Enters Service

Defender donated to Red Cross in honor of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee

The Defender 130 that Land Rover donated to the British Red Cross in honor of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 has been delivered, coming into service in North Wales.

Last June, as Her Late Majesty celebrated her seventieth year on the throne, Land Rover donated the Defender 130 to the British Red Cross, a charity that they have been associated with since 1954. The Queen was a patron of the organization for the entirety of her reign, and the donation was meant to tie these connections together.

The Defender will take up service in Northwest Wales, in Snowdonia, the Llŷn Peninsula, and Anglesey. This is a very rural part of Wales, and as Wales also has some of the worst 4G cellular data connection in the United Kingdom, the vehicle is designed with special cellular antennas, VHF radio, and advanced telemetry to keep in touch while accessing remote valleys and rugged coastal areas. A roof-mounted solar panel keeps all this charged far from infrastructure.

The third row is removed, similar to the new Defender 130 Outbound, for extra space, and the area has instead been fitted with a custom drawer and storage system. There’s even a built-in water boiler, so that the Red Cross can offer hot tea on demand, this being the way that the British assuage many problems.

The Defender should have a long life in Wales, but before it goes to wander the valleys, it will be on display at the Royal Windsor Horse Show this weekend, which The Queen regularly attended. Then, the best place to see it will be at work – performing a hard-working life of service, just as Queen Elizabeth II did.
