The kit is coming available on April 4th under the LEGO Icons collection, with item number 10317. It has 2,336 pieces, which include various roof rack accessories (jerry cans, toolbox, hi-lift jack), a snorkel, recovery boards, and a brush bar with a winch. One of the pieces is an Easter Egg for die-hard Land Rover fans: the license plate that reads L316 HUE. This has two references – to HUE 166, the number plate of the first Series I Land Rover, and L316, the internal model code for the Defender (applied retroactively in the Ford era, alongside other codes like L319 for the LR3 and L322 for the third-generation Range Rover).
The new set was launched with a video in collaboration with Land Rover Classic, with a quest to access the “Hardest to Reach LEGO Store in the World.” That store: a Defender 110 “Big Foot,” a special in-house vehicle made by Land Rover to add a “wow factor” as a support vehicle for press launches in remote locations. The only items in stock: two of the new LEGO Defender kit.
The competitors were Raha Moharrak, the first Saudi woman to climb Everest (and by doing so, all of the Seven Summits), and Aldo Kane, a Scottish adventurer with thirteen world-first expeditions under his belt. They had to race up the mountain in the Scottish Highlands – Raha in a Defender Works V8 Trophy powered by the 5.0-liter AJ-V8, Aldo in an end-of-run Defender 110 Hi-Cap pickup. Once at the top, they were presented with a LEGO kit each, and worked through the night to assemble them…something that many of us have done building LEGO kits!
This LEGO Defender kit is a LEGO "Exclusive" product. "Exclusive" is a special line that targets adults aged 12 and above. Exclusives (typically with more than 1000 pieces) are often available only at the LEGO Shops or at LEGO Stores. The LEGO Classic Defender kit launches April 4th, and it’s sure to be a hit. Like with all LEGO kits, get it while you can – demand for LEGO has gone up massively in the past few years, and kits are often retired (like the recent LEGO Technic Defender 90 L663.)
