Of course, it’s hard to blame Land Rover for going down this road, what with the green revolution driving so much of the market these days. Hybrids…flex fuels…higher CAFÉ standards and lower CO2 emissions are enough to start a Solihull engineer’s head spinning. They’ve gone the big route (Range Rover), the tough route (Defender), the rough route (LR2), and even the nimble route (Freelander/LR2), but are they – and we – ready for the sub-compact route?
"Land Rover can be lots of things. You should never stereotype Land Rover, Range Rover or us. There are lots of opportunities available to do other things with those products" says Geoff Polites, chief executive of Jaguar-Land Rover. "I don't see people attacking coal burning power stations with the enthusiasm they use to attack cars" says Geoff.
True, but a Land Rover – LAND ROVER – that can hide behind a MINI? The first vehicle that reportedly one-third of the world ever saw was a Land Rover. If it had been a sub-compact, how many of them would have missed it entirely? Curious…
