Land Rover Building New Logistics Center in England

new Land Rover logistics center

Jaguar Land Rover is in the midst of building a new parts logistics center in Appleby Magna, England, which will centralize the distribution of parts, currently taking place in several separate facilities.

The new facility will be run by Unipart, a British company which has been distributing some Land Rover parts for over 50 years. The new campus is 2,940,000 square feet, which makes it one of the UK’s largest single-customer warehouses. It’s located right off the M42 motorway in the Midlands of England, a key location for distribution both to British locations and international air shipping. The deal to build the facility is Europe’s largest-ever single-occupier build-to-suit warehouse transaction.

The facility will be highly automated, using technology from supply chain automation company Dematic to expedite the processing of parts. This automation allows JLR to process 1,000 pallets of parts an hour while reducing the footprint of the warehouse relative to the amount stored in it. Instead of packing staff walking around to gather parts, the parts will come to them to assemble into parcels and ship out.

Part of the goal of the new facility is to solve Land Rover’s supply chain issues, which have in part been strained by the pandemic. A single facility in the UK will help streamline production in tough times. It will also help reduce the number of truck trips taken to the UK factories, reducing carbon emissions and overall logistics costs.

After the crises of the past year, with Land Rover production still nowhere near normal due to the semiconductor shortage, anything that will help prepare the company for future supply chain issues is a valuable investment. The new logistics center is planned to open in late 2022.
