Britain has a lot of epic mountains for a small-ish island nation. With many people in the UK spending the past few years closer to home, Land Rover has made a guide to the most scenic mountain views in the country, comparing forty peaks across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
They’ve compared the peaks in a number of ways. First there’s difficulty to climb. These are ranked on the average time to the summit, and it’s not necessarily the tallest mountain in the country (Ben Nevis in Scotland) that’s on top. That honor goes to Aonach Beag in Scotland, a 4,048-foot tall peak with an average ascent time of six hours.
But not all of us are in great shape, so there’s also a list of the most accessible mountains – headed by Sawel Mountain in Northern Ireland, a one-hour 2,224-foot ascent. There are 10 mountains on the accessible list, which are quick and easy ways to get out there.
TripAdvisor is the classic way to rate any destination or attraction, and there’s also a list of the top 10 peaks on TripAdvisor – led by the iconic Snowdon in north Wales, which has a mountaintop rest station and a railway if you don’t want to hike. There are some other true classics here, including Ben Nevis, Ben Macdui, and Cairngorm in Scotland, and Scaffell Pike in England.
Finally, the mountains are ranked by Instagrammability, ranked by the number of images tagged with their name on the social network. Snowdon comes ahead here again, being a massive tourist site, followed by Cairngorm, Ben Nevis, Scaffell Pike, and other classics.
The guide is a nice way to contemplate the many backcountry offerings in Britain, something so many don’t think about with the country’s human history that oozes from every corner. But next time you head over to Britain, pack your hiking boots – there’s a plethora of fabulous walking to be done!
