I know. With all of the possible things that can (and do) go wrong with your Landy, windshield wiper blades can easily fall to the bottom of your priority list. Thing is, they shouldn’t. Anyone who has driven through torrential downpours with old wipers and struggled to see the road in front of them understands the importance of fresh blades. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize they need new blades until it’s too late.
As a general rule, you should make sure to change your wiper blades every six months. Treat it like you would any other regular scheduled maintenance. Exceptions to the “six month” rule can be made for people who live in arid, dusty climates, in which case it may be prudent to swap out every 3 months. The absence of precipitation can allow dirt and grit to collect in the blade, shortening its lifespan and scratching your windshield.
(Potential hazards of not replacing wiper blades)
Those in cold-weather climates also have winter weather to contend with, and need to make the seasonal switch to a sturdy winter blade. Heavy snow and ice can weigh down your wiper and freeze to the blades, making them streaky and ineffective. It’s best to get in the habit of switching out your blades at the same time you switch to winter tires.
Wiper Maintenance Tip
To reduce the risk of windshield scratching, and to extend the life of your blades, some of us at Atlantic British like to do a little wiper blade maintenance.
An alcohol swab (found in your basic first aid kit) can effectively clean dirt, grit and grime from your wiper blades when used regularly, thus limiting scratches to your windshield.
Swab the blades once a week – you will be amazed at the debris you pick up!
