There is much more that's new on the new Range Rover than the addition of those gills behind the front wheel arch. Its third re-design in its 31-year history includes a unibody structure instead of the traditional body-on-frame...independent front and rear suspensions instead of the old solid axles...and BMW engines in favor of the old engines from GM.
The design itself is Solihull Sacrosanct - there was to be no change to the clamshell hood, the floating roof supported by black pillars, the command seating position or the split tailgate. Still, Don Wyatt, Range Rover Chief Designer, hails the 3rd generation Rover as "the most capable vehicle ever launched...it has the widest possible breadth of ability and will regain the label as king of the sport-utility vehicle class." Can't argue with that! - The new Range Rover is as quiet as a Mercedes Benz S-class. - The new unibody construction is fully twice as strong as the 2002 model. - It can traverse a 35-degree slope and wade through 20 inches of water. - In low-range, first gear, it crawls as slow as 2.27 mph. - It has gained 9.3 inches in length, 5.3 inches in wheelbase and 1.8 inches of height. - Wheel travel is 2 inches better in front and 4 inches better in the rear.
