The Defender will be the support vehicle for the “world’s toughest adventure race,” the Red Bull X-Alps Adventure Race. The 12-day race traverses the Alps across five countries, and combines the ultra-athletic pursuits of hiking, ultra-running, mountaineering, and paragliding.
The 745-mile race crosses the Alps mountain range. The Defenders will serve as home for the competitors, who will live in Land Rover genuine accessory Autohome roof-top tents. They’ll need that comfort after all of that athletic activity. As the route traverses remote areas of the mountains, the Defenders' capability and self-sufficiency will be even more important.
The event requires the athletes to complete the entire route either by foot or paraglider. The teams comprise an athlete and an official supporter, who acts as a guide, advisor, and nutritionist to the athlete. Land Rover will support seven of the athletes, including seven-time Swiss winner Christian Maurer.
The competitors will use some other Defender accessories, too. The Portable Rinse System will help them clean gear and people after competing, the side-mounted Gear Carriers will expand storage space, and the integrated 4G WiFi will keep them connected.
