Alloy+Grit, New North American Land Rover Mag Now Available

Alloy And Grit Winter 2016 - 2017

As many of you may already know, there is a new Land Rover magazine for North America. The first issue of Alloy+Grit hit my mailbox a week or so ago. Now that I’ve had a chance to look it over, I thought I would share some thoughts.

My first thought, holding the actual magazine in my hands, is “Finally!”

Finally, not just because I have been eagerly awaiting its release since first hearing about it about this time last year. Finally, not just because it is the first North American magazine to feature Land Rovers. Because it isn’t. You can read about them in Overland Journal, and you can read about them in the glossy American 4x4 mags on very rare occasions. There was another all-Land Rover venture some years back that some might recall, that didn't last very long.

Finally…because this is the first Land-Rovers-only, North America-only, true full-color “glossy” magazine, that truly seeks to cater to every segment of the Land Rover market here.

There is really something here for everyone, from the armchair adventurer, hardcore off-roader, to the DIY backyard mechanics, restorers, and collectors... from the new or potential owners of Solihull’s latest leather-lined luxo-tank, to the rugged individualist tending to a fleet of Series Land Rovers from the 50s, 60s, or 70s.

Finally. Ads and product reviews for items and products we can imagine buying without performing a mental currency conversion or wondering if it will even get through customs. Articles about events we can attend without purchasing airfare or updating our passports. The North America event schedule actually is pretty concise and seems to cover all of the big ones that I know of.

So, okay, they have the basics covered, you say. The novelty of finally having our own mag won’t last if the content doesn’t deliver. The Winter issue’s offerings are clearly written and entertaining. Suffice to say that my blog articles this week are a bit behind schedule as I’ve just spent the better part of the day reading it cover to cover.

Let’s face it. Land Rovers are funny vehicles. Even the latest offerings don’t come without their quirks. Despite all of the marque’s failings over the years, the dealerships still have trouble keeping them on the lots. Many owners that you would never expect to see behind the wheel at an off road event, underneath the car on a beautiful day, or doing whatever you define as the mark of a true dyed-in-the-wool Landy enthusiast, still have an incredible affinity for their Land Rovers and even end up buying more of them. One of my Land Rover owning friends insists that you have to be a bit “touched” to enjoy the experience of owning them. I don’t exactly agree. I know what he means, but I’ve never been able to put my finger on that one unifying characteristic that gives Land Rover vehicles such broad-ranging appeal. In fact, it’s a question that I’ve pondered quite a bit, as many of my friends and family have asked me the same after watching me pour so much money and time into them over the years. Is it the Land Rover “image?” Is it dreams of overland travel and exclusive access to unspoiled wilderness inaccessible to lesser vehicles? The perceived “status” of the badge? The design? The ruggedness? The high driving position and clear view of the road? The smooth ride? The ease of repair? The “character?” I don’t have the answer to that question. I still don’t know exactly why they appeal to me, only that they do, and I can’t seem to stop myself from buying them.

Fortunately for me, I no longer have to spend my valuable free time pondering that question, as Alloy+Grit have finally (that word again) answered it for me. Here, today. It’s all of those things, and more. Whatever that “thing” is that got you behind the wheel of your first Land Rover, they will likely cover that. They’ve done a really great job of touching all the bases right in the first issue, while still keeping it interesting for those who came to the marque by some other arena than the one being addressed in any given article or item.

For those who might be on the fence about a printed publication in this modern era, this magazine isn’t something to be tossed into the recycling along with your past copies of “People” and “Good Housekeeping.” The photography is beautiful, and the graphic design and layout are perfectly understated and smooth-flowing. Physically speaking, the paper has a nice thickness and weight to it without being too heavy to fold over easily, and the ink doesn’t seem to run, smear, or come off from handling. It’s a nice publication that will be worth hanging onto, either stored for future reference in your bookcase, or displayed for visitors on your coffee table. Additionally, many features can be scanned with a mobile device to link to more in-depth online content such as photos, video galleries, and sound clips. I checked out this feature and while it doesn’t seem fully developed, it is nonetheless a unique bonus feature that complements the printed magazine, and the other Alloy+Grit online portals.

While supplies last, if you order from Atlantic British on RoverParts.com, you'll get a complimentary copy in your package! Hint: the box has to be large enough, so make sure you order more than just a keychain! (Though, if that’s all you need, we appreciate that too.)

Seriously, I can’t be too enthusiastic about this publication. Go out and get yourself a copy of Alloy+Grit. This magazine is really for you. Subscriptions are currently selling for $30 a year, that’s four quarterly issues, about what we on this side of the pond are used to paying for the UK-based mags. You can purchase subscriptions their website.
