This could be the most high-tech, tricked-out Land Rover on the planet. Which is a good thing, considering where CEO Ben Duncan is going…
Ben Duncan, the founder and CEO of email systems provider AtMail, is embarking on a six-month trek to the furthest reaches of the Australian bush… to prove a point.
Well, maybe a couple of points. He says he is returning to his “roots of innovation” – to get lost in Nature and solitude – just as he did eight years ago when he developed the core technology for AtMail in another far-reaching trip to the middle of nowhere.
But this time he’s taking a mobile office along with him. A 2009 Land Rover Defender with its own SMTP AtMail webmail server, PI-camera, MacBook Pro and VMware used for development and SVN environments, a live streaming CarCam, mobile router, WiFi device, and a host of batteries and battery chargers… all somehow crammed in beside a full kitchen. He’ll be sleeping up on the roof with the solar panel.
He wants to see if he can not only think creatively out there in the bush, but also actually conduct business from there.
The trip will take the Atmail mobile office into the far reaching parts of the Australian desert, across the coastline of Australia, into the red-center and across to the lush rainforests of tropical North-Queensland. Along the way, the office will be online using the latest BGAN Satellite and NextG mobile internet, so you can keep up with his adventures. He also has a GPS system which allows you to plot his progress on a Google map every five minutes.
"For me it's vital, as a means of rejuvenation and drawing upon innovative creativity, to immerse myself in the wilds of nature, with total solitude and 'detoxification' of modern life and to live for a bit with the rhythm of the road," said Duncan. "Being connected via the latest technologies, including satellite and our own AtMail email system, I have the flexibility to be connected, un-connected or code new software within the most unorthodox of environments. I also have the peace-of-mind knowing I have a great AtMail team dedicated to building great email solutions and delighting our customers on a daily basis."
Wouldn’t be nice if other CEOs did something like this instead of, say, redecorating their offices for a million bucks? Or just taking a million bucks more in salary? Maybe if he comes back with another great new idea it will inspire more CEOs to go on walkabout themselves. In the meantime, you can track Ben’s progress at http://atmailmobileoffice.com
