Rumors of a high-performance Range Rover Evoque model have taken on momentum in recent days following a comment made in a conversation between Autoexpress and Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern.
“What’s so right about this car is what I call killer proportions. For the moment, we’re looking at the cabriolet and special editions - we could do a more overtly sporty one, for example.” The quote doesn’t exactly confirm the production of a Range Rover Evoque Sport, but frankly, the vehicle seems like a smart decision as well as one that Land Rover is dedicating resources toward assessing.
Last October we mentioned an Autocar report that featured Evoque program director David Mitchell discussing an Evoque Sport prototype that he was currently in the process testing. The model featured the same Evoque chassis with a tuned version of the vehicle’s four-cylinder turbo engine that was producing upwards of 300 horsepower.
The concern then was how to brand and position the performance Evoque within the rest of the vehicle lineup. Will the Rover feature new badges, or be part of a sub-brand? Questions that likely still need answering.
