“There have been many great cars launched over the last 12 months…but these are just one-trick ponies. The Evoque is more than that. It’s a pony that is also a racehorse, a shire horse, a dray horse, a show jumper and an easy rosette-winner in the dressage competition. It’s brilliant. And it’s the Top Gear Car of the Year.”
Jeremy Clarkson, the colorful television host of Top Gear, used this metaphor as a strong endorsement of BBC Top Gear Magazine’s decision to name the Range Rover Evoque the BBC Top Gear Magazine’s 2011 Car of the Year. The Evoque beat out some of its strongest competition yet, receiving the nod over offerings from BMW (1-Series M), Mclaren (MP4-12c) and Ferrari (FF) to name a few. As Clarkson so artfully expressed, The Evoque brought a level of versatility to the table that could not be matched by the rest of the field.
The Top Gear Award will presumably hold special significance for the Land Rover team given the prominence of the magazine and television show in Britain. The judging panel for the Top Gear Car of the Year is composed of Top Gear Magazine editor-in-chief Charlie Turner, Top Gear television hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, and a host of Top Gear road testers and writers.
