There have been “off-road” cars since 1948… and luxury vehicles have been around since – arguably – the inception of the “motorized carriage.” But leave it to the venerable British to demand that going off-road should not compromise one’s comfort. So, on June 17, 1970, the first Range Rover took the adventurous driver market by storm!
The original was designed to be hosed out at the end of a day’s run. Can you imagine? But it was as comfortable as it was capable; a new concept to the automotive world. In fact, Land Rover was so happy with its design that it didn’t even change it in any significant form from 1970 to 1994! Can you imagine that happening in today’s world? Recently, of course, the Range Rover has gone so far upscale (see the Autograph model) and even racy (see the Sport) that it is almost indistinguishable from the original model. Particularly if, as rumored, the sleek new LRX will be branded a Range Rover.
Still, it reigns supreme, which – longevity aside – is in itself a remarkable accomplishment, given all the “wanna-be’s” that have come along since.
Happy birthday, Range Rover. And many happy returns.
