They call it the ultimate global adventure - a test of strategy, stamina, 4x4 driving and multi-sport skills that will span Southeast Asia and South America.
The Land Rover G4 (four consecutive stages) will take competitors representing 18 nations through both urban and impossibly remote areas, testing them at every turn, until one competitor emerges victorious.
How tough is it? Just for fun, the organizers thought it would be interesting to test out the wooded obstacle course on some pretty physical guys – Britain’s leading professional Rugby players. One player described the Treadmill Challenge as “the hardest twenty seconds of my life.”
The first hurdle was surviving the selection process. The 18 competitors have been selected, and the Challenge is set to begin in Bangkok on April 23. The countdown has begun!
The competitors will be ranked and before each stage of the challenge they will be paired up with another competitor to form nine bi-national teams. Each team will be supplied with a Land Rover painted a distinctive Tangiers Orange and sporting accessories such as a WARN winch, front/rear lamp guards, front/rear undershield protection plates, full length roof rack and ladder, and rear towing step and tow kit.
The first stage of the journey (April 23 - 29) begins in Bangkok, a bustling city, and then crosses the Mekong River into the remote areas of Laos, finishing in the capital of Vientiane.
Stage Two (April 30 - May 5) takes participants through heavily forested jungle and into Luang Prabang, a city of gleaming temple roofs and crumbling French provincial architecture.
The next stage crosses continents and moves to South America. From May 6 - 13 competitors will move from the cosmopolitan city of Rio de Janeiro to the small colonial city of Sucre, Bolivia.
The final stage of the G4 Challenge (May 14 - 20) includes a convoy to Potosi, which is the highest city in the world, at over 4000 metres altitude. From there, the competition crosses remote villages to arrive at The Salar de Uyuni – the world's largest salt lake.
On the last day of the competition the top four competitors go head-to-head to find the ultimate winner. Stay tuned for further updates, or follow the progress on the Land Rover G4 Challenge web site.
