Replacing The Front Wheel Speed Sensor on Discovery Series 2
Watch Jim as he shares some tips for installing a front ABS sensor on a Discovery Series 2. Procedure is same for all Discovery 2 vehicles from 1999 to 2004.
Notes for Replacing Front Wheel Speed (ABS) Sensor on Discovery Series II '99-'04 - SSW500020 Hi it's Jim. I do the technical support here at Atlantic British. Today we're putting the Hawkeye Tool to work a little bit here. And you'll notice there is a sensor problem with the ABS system in this truck. It's quite common with this truck actually. Disco 2s, really, it happens all the time. What I'm going to show you today is basically how to replace the right front sensor which is bad in this car. I'm going to start out underneath the hood. We are underneath the hood now. Here is the replacement wheel speed sensor. As you can see it comes with a long harness. What Rover wants you to do is to wire this in as close to the ECU as possible. What I'm going to show is that someone has all ready done a repair in this car and didn't do it correctly. Right down here you can see the connector that goes to the right front wheel speed sensor. They spliced it in here. What happens with these is that this connection goes bad. The idea with this long wire is you get rid of this connector. Once you get it into the hub and everything you bring a wire up here, this goes away. You won't see it any more. You won't have it any more. What you do is you get up here with your wire. You'll find a grommet down in the corner here you can snip off, there's a little place for extra wires. You can take that off and just feed your wire down and inside the car. We're going to go back inside and I'll show you where we're going to go with that. What I want to show you is a lot of people don't know where to find the slabs, or the ABS computer. I've all ready taken out the glove box here and there's a cardboard cover on the back. The glove box just comes out with 4 screws and boom it's out of there. Here is where this Slabs computer is - it's a long black computer with multiple plugs in it. What you need to get out though is down underneath. You're going to find the last connector in, right here, it will have green wires, brown and white, brown and white. The brown and white ones are for the front. You need to figure out which one is for the right front. What you want to do is to make the splice in here, not under the hood like this car has because it still gets mud, salt and everything else. Just run it here. Camp it back up, and go back to your tool which you were reading the fault about, and clear the fault out. You can get your sensors here at Atlantic British, front, rear or whatever. There are a couple other faults that come with the Disco 2, the shuttle valve comes to mind, we have those kits too. Check those parts out at RoverParts.com or give us a call at 1-800-533-2210. Talk to the sales staff, they'll know exactly what you need. But the correct repair is to put the sensor in with the harness all the way back to the ECU.
