With Land Rover’s move to the sleek new Range Rover Evoque, there are some who would question Land Rover’s commitment to its roughshod roots. Consumers are puzzled (although sales are up 74% in an August-to-August comparison) and even Land Rover executives are admitting that the brand may need better clarity as it moves forward into India and China.
So…what to do? Will they ditch the Defender nameplate (gasp!) in favor of a new look and feel for the new model, herein aptly named Project Icon? Will they eschew the famed T5 steel platform chassis in favor of some new high-tech lighter weight material? Will they employ Land Rover’s Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) to help improve economy and reduce emissions, thereby hinting at a North American re-entry?
Right now, it appears to be anybody’s guess. As the man said, “the time’s they are a-changing”.
