The Defender shown here belonged to Her Majesties Coastguard. A pair of part-time coastguards answered an emergency one night in 1992 at Berwick-on-Tweed. The call turned out to be a false alarm, so they left the scene. The problem was that the driver didn't see the edge of the cliff when he backed up and ended up driving over it. After a free fall of 80 ft (that's equivalent to a 9-story building!) the Defender landed on its roof on a heap of rocks. The two coastguards were able to walk away with just a few minor scratches, which is amazing when you take a look at the vehicle. Despite the structural strength of the Land Rover, we would not advise you to try this at home. Both of the guards were rescued by a passing helicopter whose pilot happened to notice a pair of headlights pointing skywards. A strange night, but a great story!
