Evidently, if you want a compact SUV, the Freelander is the best option, and if you’re more in the market for a premium SUV, you should opt for the larger Discovery 3/LR3.
This is what actual owners said in a survey that Auto Express sent out earlier this year, where their vehicles bested the likes of the new BMW X5 and Mercedes M-Class, and even the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport!
In the end, it was the Discovery’s blend of practicality and desirability that won over the judges.
Auto Express editor-in-chief, David Johns said: "The Discovery 3 is more widely available than its immediate rivals, and the spacious cabin is a delight. The proud, boxy styling hints at the fact that the Land Rover is more capable off-road than any other car in this class – so if you want an authentic, grass-roots 4x4, the Discovery is the one to go for."

This feedback coupled with receiving the Used Car Honors award really proves that the Discovery 3 is an ideal vehicle if you are in the market for a used 4x4."
While many entries in the over-crowded SUV marketplace offer “seating for seven”, the seven-seat interior in the Disco3/LR3 is not only huge, it’s hugely adjustable...and hugely comfortable. And when only five are on board, there is plenty of room for luggage. Add Land Rover’s optional air-suspension and Terrain Response System and you’ve got a very crowd-pleasing package.
