It used to be, if you wanted a real, week-long challenge for you and your Land Rover, you’d either have to qualify for an International event or spend a year or so planning out your own escape. Then along came AdventureTrex…
AdventureTrex is Graham and Joyce Herbert’s brainchild: providing Land Rover enthusiasts the world over with fully-supported and comprehensive jungle expedition packages in Belize, “The Jewel Of The Carribean.”
Their trips are educational... kind of like learning how to handle a gun is educational; don’t pay attention in this class and you’ll be putting yourself at grave risk!
Actually, you can custom design a tour to you, your group’s or your company’s liking, from buzzing around Belize’s Mayan ruins (Archaeologists now count 36,000 palaces, pyramids and other buildings here!) in their fleet of Land Rovers to taking on a series of grueling survival tasks in order to “escape the jungle.”
This is real adventure – and you don’t have to spend a year of your life planning it. There have been more than 95 mammal, 45 reptile, 18 amphibian, and 112 fish species recorded in the area you’ll be driving through, including Jaguars, Harpy Eagles, Tapirs, Scalet Macaws, Crocodiles and Black Howler Monkeys. You’ll sleep under the stars in a hammock, take bucket showers, use machetes to clear paths through the jungle and get real good at handling your Land Rover through mud, river crossings and what they call “close encounter jungle growth driving”.
Still, for some people all of that is still not enough. OK, say the Herbert’s. Fine. Let’s do this then. We’ll drop you off in the jungle and your job will be to escape from it within seven days. Whoever survives, wins.
Escape Belize – a fiendishly devised adventure – is an 8-day jungle/river endurance challenge. Day One: you’re flown in from the International Airport in a light plane close over the jungle canopy to get to your lodge, where you are given instructions in jungle survival techniques, including identifying plants and friendly (and non-friendly) jungle life, water purification, shelter construction, etc. Pay attention. You’ll need all of this information to survive.
Day Two: You’ll be handed a machete – and learn how to use it – before Map Reading 101, GPS operational instruction, and how to fish with a primitive hand line.
Day Three: Your challenge begins when you are dropped of “in all honesty, in the middle of nowhere” as the brochure says. Your challenge is to escape this environment using the GPS destinations you will be provided with. When you reach your destination (hopefully, before dusk!) you will apply your training to the collecting and cooking of food and building a shelter for the night.
Day Four: Escape by river! This is a grueling 8-hour paddle to your next destination with some very real opportunities to witness some amazing wildlife along the way. When you arrive, you do the shelter and food collection thing; you know, survival stuff.
Day Five: Escape by horse! You get the routine now?
Day Six: Escape on foot and mountain bike! Tired yet?
Day Seven: Relax – you’ve earned it! – and take in some shopping at San Ignacio before packing up and leaving on Day Eight, with a cortex-full of indelible images and some great stories to tell your sedentary friends back home!
