Land Rover is celebrating 21 years of its most exclusive and expensive offering, the Range Rover Autobiography Edition.
The Autobiography scheme was first announced at the London motor show in 1993 and became available a year later. Early models were all completely custom and built to the buyers’ exact specifications, by a team of dedicated craftspeople.
Facing high demand shortly after its introduction, Land Rover created a limited edition version of the Autobiography based on the LSE long wheelbase. Only 25 were built, making them extremely collectible and highly sought after.
Additional models in the P38 and third-generation Range Rovers continued to set the standard for luxury, comfort, and sophistication. Many technologies such as satellite navigation and video systems appeared well before their more widespread adoption within the automotive industry.
Autobiography customers could choose from a wide variety of finish materials, including paint color, sheepskin rugs, and species of wood used for the interior trims. If you wanted something not on the menu? According to Land Rover, one “only had to ask- and many did.”
The 2011 Autobiography was, at that time, the most expensive Range Rover ever offered, at £120,000. Now for 2015, Land Rover is offering a fourth generation Range Rover with its own Autobiography package, the “Range Rover Autobiography Black.”
These vehicles will all be built by Land Rover’s own Special Vehicle Operations section. The new version sports a full panorama roof, climate control and massage seating, and optional executive seating package for the rear with USB center console and electrically operated leather-finished folding tables.
John Edwards, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations, said: "For 21 years, Autobiography has given our customers the chance to specify the most luxurious Range Rovers according to their tastes and desires. Within Special Vehicle Operations we are continuing this tradition. The latest Autobiography Black has greater levels of luxury and sophistication than ever before.”
Autobiography editions are also now available for the both the Range Rover Evoque and the soon-to-be mothballed Defender.
