Land Rover has revealed that it will be building an extreme off-road version of its latest Discovery model. Like most of Land Rover’s more purpose built off-road editions, it will will be developed and built by JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations department.
According to UK automotive website Autocar, Land Rover will be offering the SVX version of Discovery 5 as part of SVO’s strategic plan to highlight the luxury, performance and capability features of its vehicles.
With the Range Rover SVAutobiography covering the luxury market, the newly Discovery SVX will be the first honest off-roader offered by the newly revamped SVO.
Land Rover’s new Discovery will be fully revealed later this year. The SVX version will likely be launched between 12 and 18 months later.
John Edwards, head of JLR’s SVO division recognizes the importance of having a true off-roader in Land Rover’s model range. “The opportunity might be different from a market perspective, but it is obvious from a Land Rover perspective,” he said. “From an emotional perspective it is pressing that we do an SVX.”
