To be clear this Defender recreation is more sculpture than vehicle which pays homage to the vehicle’s illustrious history in Africa through the appropriation of elaborate external ornamentation. Described as a “narrative hotch-potch on four wheels,” the creation is composed of wood, bronze, crystal, textiles, ceramics and stained glass, and will be featured at the PAN Amsterdam Gallery until December 1st.
“As you would expect from someone who knows nothing about making a car, our approach got completely out of hand. The numerous elements kept accumulating. The car literally sticks its tongue out. It wants to be something that it actually isn’t. It’s become a great concoction, monumental and cynical.”
Hats off to the Studio Job for an impressive work of art, and for having the self-awareness to recognize how delightfully ridiculous their finished product turned out.
