Land Rover has recently completed the production of its 1,000,000th Land Rover Discovery at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull Manufacturing Plant in the United Kingdom.
To celebrate the remarkable milestone, Land Rover is honoring the vehicle the best way it knows how: by sending the truck on an 8,000 mile overland journey from Birmingham, UK to Beijing, China. The 1,000,000th Discovery (accompanied by two other vehicles) will travel across 13 countries in a span of 50 days. The trip – cleverly named The Journey of Discovery – has been carefully planned to ensure the Discovery’s arrival in Beijing coincides with the Beijing Motor Show on April, 23rd. Talk about marketing!
Phil Popham, Group Sales Operations Director, Jaguar Land Rover:
"Discovery is an extraordinary vehicle and it deserves to be unleashed on an extraordinary journey. There is no better vehicle to tackle all weather, all terrain than the Discovery 4. This grueling expedition will be visiting 13 countries and covering 8,000 miles, and it's a fitting initiative to celebrate the one millionth vehicle."
The Journey of Discovery is reminiscent of “The First Overland Expedition” of 1955, in which the same Birmingham-to-Beijing journey was attempted by a Series 1 Land Rover. This time, Land Rover’s “Journey” will serve as a fundraiser for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societes (IFRC). Land Rover’s goal is to raise 1 million pounds for use in a water sanitation project in Uganda.
Mark Cameron, Land Rover Global Brand Extension Director:
"Land Rover is delighted to launch the One Million Pound fundraiser in aid of the IFRC – an organization we have had a relationship with since 1954. The funds will be used directly by the IFRC, over a three-year period and will be donated to a water sanitation project in Uganda, with over 45,000 beneficiaries"
Anyone interested in making a donation to the IFRC can do so by visiting Land Rover’s 1,000,000th Discovery page here.
