A. Kahn Designs has made quite a name for itself in the world of aftermarket tuning. Kahn vehicles are attention grabbing, featuring aesthetic modifications that re-imagine the stock vehicles from which they draw their inspiration. Kahn has used the Land Rover Defender as their muse on several occasions, so it’s no wonder why they’re upset to see the end of the classic Rover on the horizon.
Project Kahn has decided that they won’t let Land Rover scrap the Defender without a fight. They’re petitioning Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralph Speth to keep the vehicle in production beyond 2015. Citing the Defender’s unique heritage and iconic status, Kahn makes a compelling case for the vehicle.
“What do Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Fourth Bridge, The Shard, Windsor Castle & The Land Rover Defender, have in common? They are all intrinsically & indisputably examples of iconic British creations. That is something that cannot be argued with. Yet one of those iconic pieces of Britishness in under threat. The Land Rover Defender the last of the icons of British motor industry. It is the ultimate workhorse, unmatched in it’s field. Since the first one rolled off the production line in 1983 as the 110, the Defender has been turned to almost every line of work.
It has been a farm vehicle, a police car, a mountain rescue vehicle, an ambulance, an expedition vehicle... the list goes on. The British Army, as well as every army across the globe, have a long history of using the Defender. Even the US Army has used Defenders, after realizing these were a more capable vehicle than their own Humvees. We, enthusiasts and owners, must save this iconic vehicle. We have begun a petition in an attempt to persuade Jaguar Land Rover to reverse their decision & would be prepared to present the petition in person to 10 Downing Street. We cannot let yet another British icon be killed off. Not when it still has much work to do.”
We admire Kahn’s initiative and encourage readers to sign the petition. You can find it here: Sign Petition to Keep Defender!
