Jaguar Land Rover (of Tata Motors) has announced a new joint venture with Chinese automotive manufacturer Chery Automobile to create a new luxury automobile platform based on current Jaguar models.
Jaguar Land Rover has been publicly flirting with Chinese automotive manufacturers for nearly a year, evaluating prospective partnerships that would allow Jaguar Land Rover to expand its presence in the world’s fastest growing automotive market. JLR had previously met with executives of the prominent Great Wall Motor Co Ltd., but conversations never materialized.
The Jaguar Land Rover and Chery Automobile collaboration promises to develop new vehicles for sale in China. In fact, China’s National Development and Reform Commission (which has the power to allow or deny large scale joint venture projects) has approved the joint venture under the pretense that both parties make substantial, original contributions to the project.
It is rumored that future production vehicles that use the JLR/Chery-developed luxury platform will carry either a Chery logo or a joint venture logo.
The duo aims to have their new platform ready by 2016.
