It should come as no surprise that Jaguar Land Rover has reaffirmed its ownership of the trademarked Defender name.
According to sources, JLR has applied to renew its ownership of the Defender name in Europe as well as in other parts of the world.
This should help to put to bed once and for all any discussions or rumors regarding the potential for Land Rover to sell the name or manufacturing rights to another entity. It should also alleviate any doubts as to the manufacturer’s plans to bring back the Defender model in one form or another at some point in the future.
JLR representatives reportedly stated that the renewal of the trademark was a routine procedure, and was totally unrelated to UK billionaire Jim Ratcliffe’s reported plans to try to bring to market Defenders, or Defender-like vehicles, now that the iconic British 4x4 is no longer in production.
While reports indicated that building Defenders was not profitable for JLR, the termination of the model brought a renewed interest in them and prices for existing models of all ages has risen noticeably since the end of production in January of 2016.
