By now, most Rover enthusiasts and readers of this blog are familiar with the safety and emissions standard issues that prevent Land Rover from selling their popular vehicle in U.S. markets. Restricting the Defender from the U.S. market has created a black market for the vehicle (to the surprise of no one). The trucks can fetch a six-figure price tag, making it attractive for daring “businessmen” to alter VIN numbers and registration plate numbers in an attempt to smuggle and sell the vehicles in the States.
U.S. customs officials have become privy to the black market trade and are adept at identifying illegal Land Rover vehicles. After customs seize the illegal Rovers they dispose of them, by crushing them into scrap metal. It’s tragic. Just watch (if you can).
