North American Land Rover enthusiasts can finally rejoice. At least those with the scratch to buy a brand new model can. Land Rover has finally committed to bringing diesel engine options to North American versions of its vehicles.
For decades, diesel has been the preference for most owners in the UK and Europe, partly due to the engines’ suitability in a working vehicle but mostly I reckon due to the vast difference in fuel economy and the higher fuel costs in that part of the world.
Now those highly efficient, torque-y engines are going to be available here as well. This reflects a shift that is occurring across the motor industry as clean burning diesel motors built to new EU environmental standards become easier to bring into compliance with relatively strict US rules.
The Diesel versions boast 32 percent better fuel economy than the supercharged petrol motors currently on offer.
The first in the lineup to receive the TD6 power plant will be the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. Land Rover made the announcement and then quickly followed that up by debuting both versions at the Detroit Motor Show this week. Both are set to go on sale for the 2016 model year starting in the fall of 2015. There is no indication on pricing at this time.
